With medical science developing rapidly, some cancer patients can now make a full recovery with some forms of cancer now deemed non-serious. An expert has said that "Be careful, that you don't focus on cost alone when it comes to [taking out insurance]. You need to be sure that the private medical or critical illness policy you have paid for will pay out when you need it to."

Also, your policy will usually become void once a claim is made, this will affect people if they are likely to have several stages to an illness such as some types of cancer.

The number of failed claims has forced the Association of British Insurers to review their procedures. The ABI have now come to an agreement to treat each case individually, and pay out accordingly, depending on the severity of the illness and the consequences it could have.
