How precise are the goals that you set for yourself? Do you prefer broad, over reaching goals, or simple, day to day goals? My point here is not to say that one is better than the other, but I do honestly believe that you have to be able to handle both if you want to be able to accomplish strong marketing. Ok, here is my take on this. Every company needs to have at least a few broad goals. These are things that are going to go well beyond each individual ad campaign and instead be the overall guiding force beyond the company. The reason why this is so important is because it not only gives you something clear to work towards, but it helps you stay on track for your developing your company in the future. The more attention you give to just goals dealing with only the moment you find yourself in, the greater the chances are of you failing to have solid plans for long term success. You might find yourself always rushing to keep up because you just do not have those kind of long term goals set. Now, for short term goals the reason why these become important is because they can help dictate what type of marketing you are going to be getting done right now. Let us say you have the goal of introducing yourself to a certain amount of additional people. Once you know the exact goal you can figure out the best ways to accomplish it. Rather than going with normal marketing methods you can instead focus on getting custom greeting cards done. This way you have a marketing method that is directly tied with your goal. You will be able to better introduce yourself with something like custom greeting cards than you would with a more generalized marketing push. These kinds of goals are going to be the driving force behind each action you do every day. Without these kinds of goals you might not be able to achieve the bigger things, because you are not even sure on how to go about accomplish the small stuff. Sit down and try to map out a variety of goals. Give yourself two categories for your long term and your short term goals. Once you have that done than start filling in the blanks. First I would say write what you already know. If you have been in business for awhile than you should have at least some long term goals already made up. If you do not, that is your first step. When you are finished you should take those goals and figure out practical ways of accomplishing them. Decide what type of advertising will work for each, and now you know the next step for your marketing. Try doing this every year, or every few months, and you will start to notice your marketing become much more focused, and much more effective.
