The General Motor Corporation (GMC) Yukon, like most Sports Utility Vehicles or SUV, combine the passenger capacity of most station wagons and the pulling power of pickup trucks. As the descendant of the GMC K5 Jimmy line, the Yukon has since been one GMC's more solid SUV lines, ever since its official release in 1992 which was at the height of the popularity of SUV's. As one of the few full-sized SUV's released by GMC, the Yukon has also been subject to criticism normally directed to SUV's, such as poor fuel mileage and emission issues. Also, the name SUV isn't entirely correct, as the original design of such vehicles was for off-road and outdoor travel. In the US however, SUV's have been associated more to large families, particularly to mothers, not only due to its inherently spacious interior, but also due to the belief that is safer compared to sedans. Current Yukon models have reflected this trend, concentrating on a more urban-oriented features and design. GMC has also answered fuel economy problems with their next generation of the GMC Yukon. For existing owners of the GMC Yukon, there are steps in ensuring that their ride can go around the issues that plague most SUV's. One such step is making sure that the vehicle is always in top condition and performing at an optimal level. While this is easily be overlooked, any vehicle that isn't is handicapped by badly optimized parts will likely take more out of the engine, and waste fuel by not getting enough power from the burn. Outside of the usual tune ups from the local mechanic, one could opt to check the ignition system of the GMC Yukon. Checking if the ignition coil and the distributor are functioning properly are priority. Obviously, faulty coils mean that the vehicle won't start. On the other hand, faulty distributors could lead to the spark plugs not firing off properly or out of sync, thus hindering the power of the SUV. In such cases, GMC Yukon cap & rotor kits are available in most autoparts shop as well as online. Most Original Equipment Manufacturer replacement parts will do the trick, however one could also opt to tweak their SUV a bit by checking aftermarket performance shops and websites. Countering bad emissions can be easily achieved by investing on a GMC Yukon catalytic converter, or checking if the old one needs replacements. Catalytic converters, or catcons function by creating a controlled environment in which the oxidation of harmful gases such as carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. This of course, would mean that the GMC Yukon must use unleaded gasoline only, otherwise lead would only lead to catcon poisoning. In some countries and states in the US, catcons are pretty much required by law. Aside from the two steps, common maintenance practices will not only be more economic by preserving the vehicle, but also guarantee that SUV's like the GMC Yukon will not fall under the same criticisms aimed at the car class.
