This holiday season is seeing more drunk driving arrests in San Diego County, according to the LA Times. These statistics go against an overall statewide trend of decreased arrests. In San Diego County there were two fatalities over the Thanksgiving weekend.
While an arrest is not the same as a conviction, these numbers indicate that documentation for SR22 insurance will be needed by several drivers in San Diego County as a result of having their drivers’ licenses suspended. In California, an SR22 form is filed to show that an at-risk driver, such as someone who has a DUI or DWI, has insurance coverage in place. Usually, drivers have to maintain SR22 status for at least three years.
When SR22 is required, most insurance companies will file the form with the state once necessary coverage is obtained. However, insurance companies will also notify the state if that coverage expires, so it is important to keep up with insurance premiums for the duration of the SR22.
Other drivers who may need to file SR22 insurance documentation are those who have had their license suspended for any reason. This would include the aforementioned DUI/DWI, reckless driving charges, or driving without a license. Once the license is reinstated, SR22 documentation must be provided, even if the individual does not own a vehicle.
Because someone whose license has been suspended is considered a high-risk driver, insurance rates will often be much higher than normal. However, it is possible for someone who needs an SR22 filed to shop around for the best rate.
Obviously, the best way to avoid having to worry about SR22 insurance requirements is to avoid license suspending situations. The holiday driving statistics for San Diego County highlights a disturbing trend among drivers who fail to recognize their responsibility to stay off of the road if they have been drinking. Avoiding drinking and driving is about more than just keeping lower insurance rates. It is a matter of life and death because almost one third of all traffic-related deaths can be attributed to alcohol impaired driving.
If you drink alcoholic beverages this holiday season, do yourself and everyone else a favor by staying off of the roadways. You will keep your driver’s license, stay safe, and maintain lower insurance rates. If you have already lost your license for a DUI conviction or any other reason and are looking to get it reinstated, make sure that you have SR22 insurance before getting back on San Diego County roads.
