By: Jillian Phillips

If you are suffering from sinus infection, you would know for sure how hard it is dealing with its symptoms. For a lucky few, the symptoms may only be mild and last for a short time. But this is not always the case. There are other sinus infection sufferers who deal with symptoms so debilitating that the condition has drastically affected how they live their lives.

Sinus Infection and Its Symptoms
Sinus infection is more commonly know as sinusitis. When you have a sinus infection, this generally means that the sinus cavities behind the nose and eyes are infected or inflamed. Depending on the duration of its symptoms, sinus infection can be categorized into two – acute and chronic sinusitis. When the infection starts quickly and lasts for a short time, you are most probably suffering from acute sinusitis. Acute sinusitis is not that complicated to treat, sometimes home remedies are all that is needed. Chronic sinusitis, on the other hand, is a more serious condition. Its symptoms typically last for more than eight weeks and keep on coming back. It is also more complicated to treat, compared with acute sinusitis.

Regardless of what type of infection you have, the symptoms are almost the same. The most common sinus infection symptoms are clogged nose due to excessive mucus, runny nose with green or yellow discharge and frequent headaches. You would also most likely feel pain or tenderness around your eyes, cheeks and nose. Your sense of taste and smell can also be affected. Other signs and symptoms include constant coughing, toothache, bad breath and sore throat, fever and fatigue.

How to Get Rid of Sinus Infection Symptoms
Do you want to be completely rid of sinus infection symptoms? This can be hard but still possible. But you have to work closely with your doctor to do so. First, it is important to know the cause of infection. The medications that you will take and treatments you will undergo will depend largely on the cause of infection.

To manage sinus infection symptoms, there are several over-the-counter drug medications available in the market today. For instance, oral decongestants are helpful in reducing the swelling of the sinuses. Analgesics and ibuprofen are recommended to ease the pain brought about by headaches. Mucolytics are also prescribed to get rid of mucus. However, these drugs only provide temporary relief from the symptoms. There are also drugs that combat the sinus infection head-on and eliminate the source of infection. Antibiotics are often prescribed if the infection is caused by bacteria. If due to allergies, steroid nasal sprays or drops are prescribed. Anti-fungal medicines should be taken if the infection is caused by fungi. Home remedies such as steam treatment and nasal irrigation are also recommended for faster recovery and prevention.
