Joint Pain

Orthopedic and Arthritis

The Orthopedic and Arthritis Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital continues the legacy of innovation, inspired by our predecessor, the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, which opened to specifically care for patients with arthritis and other debilitating bone and joint diseases.

Why Joint Pain Increases

When a patient experiences joint pain, a physician may perform a physical examination to diagnose an underlying condition that may be causing the pain. Diagnostic tests that may be performed include blood tests, x-rays and joint fluid analysis.

Tips To Treat Joint Pain

Bring a friend or family member with you to your appointment for the cortisone injection to treat your joint pain. It is possible that the area of your body where you are injected may be sore and make it difficult to drive yourself home.

Joint pain can be greatly reduced by exercise, walking, stretching, massage and mineral supplements. Exercise increases circulation but if you don't stretch afterwards your joints can hurt.

Stretch all parts of your body for at least 10 minutes a day. Exercise and eat nutritious foods and you should get relief.

Pain in the muscles and joints is frequently termed "arthritis" by patients and sometimes by doctors, but most "arthritis" is not arthritis at all. True arthritis affects the joints, and the joints are red, warm, swollen, and painful to move. "Arthralgia" means pain without inflammation in the joints.

Be prepared for your doctor to use a local anesthetic in combination with the cortisone injection to reduce the pain of injection itself. The anesthetic will reduce some of the pain immediately but once it wears off you may need to wait a few days before the cortisone takes effect.
