How celebrity diets work

By: Rosie Peters

Several years ago, I read an article in a reputable women's magazine (is there any other kind?) about the actor Melanie Griffiths. The article had an unflattering photo of the her profile with a bit of a tummy bulge. The article screamed about how fat and flabby the poor woman had become.

About a month later, the same magazine ran an article about Ms Griffith's alleged liposuction surgery with an appropriate more flattened tummy pic to illustrate the point.

Blow me down if just another month later and that reputable magazine is advertising Melanie Griffith's no fail diet and exercise program with flattering photo and no mention of the recent flab or surgery claim. And, you guessed it,
you could benefit from that proof perfect celebrity diet just by buying the magazine. Go figure.

I'll never forget this train of events and the lesson I learnt from them. Don't trust the magazines (you may be way ahead of me on this one, but indulge me for a minute here). Read and enjoy and take what works for you from them, but never ever be sucked in by the hype to sell copy.

We shouldn't believe what magazines say about celebrities; their diets, their exercise programs, their personal habits.

Celebrity diets work because that's the way magazines write them up. Magazine editors keep their jobs by selling, so they have to work hard to make us believe what they say. And we do want to believe.

We should understand however that celebrities look good because they invest heaps of time, effort and money into their bodies. These people routinely employ personal trainers, yoga instructors, dieticians and chefs. They have the time and money to spend on health retreats. They may even invest in surgery. It's the nature of the beast that celebrities generally feel obliged to look good for the lens of the microscope of the world of envious onlookers like you and me.

But celebrities who are fit and healthy do the hard yards as well. As tempting as it is to say "It's alright for her/him, they have the money, time, genes, luck..." but you know that's just a jealous excuse really, don't you? You know that you can lose weight and keep it off without being a celebrity. You just have to put your mind to it and banish those excuses to a totally forgotten, never opened box under the bed.

OK, most of us don't have money to burn, but you can do a single introductory session with a reputable personal trainer to get their ideas for what will work best for your effective weight control diet and fitness.

You can read up on nutrition and plan your meals. You can invest in a reputable diet and/or exercise program.

You can take an hour a day to devote to your health and fitness. It's only one hour a day and it will make a huge difference to your life.

You can lose weight even without being a wealthy celebrity. It is simple, you just have to want it enough.
