The word scabies comes from Latin and it means “itch”, as itching is one of the infection's primary symptoms. There are a lot of myths surrounding scabies, but in truth the actual disease is triggered by a small invertebrate mite (read: microscopic bug) called Sarcoptes Scabiei. When this mite gets into contact with human skin, it starts burrowing deep inside it and deposits its eggs inside the skin core. Scabies is a skin disease or infection that is seen affecting many people in this world. It is mainly caused by mites that can be found burrowing, or tunneling, just under the outer layer of skin. This leads to eruption of pimple-like rash on the skin of the infected person, also known as scabies rash. Since scabies mites are extremely small and nearly transparent in color, it is difficult to notice their existence. Anyone who is diagnosed with scabies, as well as his or her sexual partner and anyone in close contact with the patient should receive treatment. Several lotions to treat Scabies are available. Always follow the directions provided by your doctor or the directions on the package insert. One most common method to get rid of scabies is to prevent the mite from spreading and it can happen only if the scabies is diagnosed at the right time. Once the disease is diagnosed at the right time, the treatment should be started immediately and the person should not be allowed to go for school, day care or work, as at these places the risk of the spread of mite is more. Sometimes it has noticed that the infected person attend school, childcare and sudden outbreak of scabies takes place at these places. Presence of the mite burrow(s), reddish brown nodules or lesions, and persistent itching. Itching is known to worsen at night. Common sites are: webs and sides of fingers and toes, pubic and groin area, armpits, bends of elbows and knees, wrists, navel, breasts, lower portion of buttocks, occasionally the penis and scrotum, waist and abdomen; they are rarely found on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, and rarely from the neck upward. The most effective way to get rid of your scabies is to visit a doctor. Not only can a doctor prescribe you with an antibiotic to reduce the length of your case of scabies, they can also identify and take care of any potential complications. In many cases, it takes a doctor's experience and attention to detail to notice something that may soon into a more serious complication of scabies. The use of bitter gourd (karela) has proved beneficial in the treatment of scabies. A quarter to half a cup of juice of this vegetable, depending on the age of the child should be given mixed with half a teaspoon of lime juice. This juice should be sipped slowly on an empty stomach once daily for a week or so. The typical treatment for scabies involves applying 5% permethrin cream or lotion (Elimite) to a child's entire body from the neck down. Keep in mind that infants may need to have their head treated too, including their hairline and scalp. The cream or lotion is left on for 8-14 hours and then washed off and then a second treatment may be needed a week later. Close contacts, including all family members, should also be treated at the same time.
