Treatment may be needed for several days before bilirubin levels in the blood return to normal. The baby's eyes are shielded to prevent the optic nerves from absorbing too much light. Another type of treatment uses a special fiberoptic blanket. There is no need to shield the baby's eyes with this treatment, and it can be done at home. In rare cases, where bilirubin levels are extremely high, the baby may need to receive a blood transfusion. Feed babies frequently and don't let them become dehydrated. With jaundice, the important thing to prevent is kernicterus -- toxic levels of bilirubin accumulating in the brain. Early identification and treatment of jaundice will usually prevent kernicterus, whatever the cause. Beyond this, jaundice is a symptom of other problems that have their own prevention strategies. Intravenous immunoglobulin-If moderate to severe jaundice develops because of blood group differences between mother and baby, an intravenous transfusion of antibodies may decrease the jaundice and lessen the need for exchange blood transfusion. Soak 8 kernels of almonds, 2 dried dates, and 5 small cardamoms overnight in water. The outer coating of the almond kernels and the inner seeds of dried dates should be removed the next morning and the whole material should be rubbed into a fine paste. Then, 50 grams of sugar and an equal amount of butter should be mixed in it and the patient should lick this mixture. Boil 1 cup of water, when it boils add 8-10 lemon leaves. Cover and leave for 4-5 minutes. Drink the decoction for 4-5 days. Take a few fresh papaya leaves and make a paste. Take about 1/2 tsp of this paste and mix with 1 tsp honey and consume it everyday. In this procedure, a type of instrument for looking inside the body, called an endoscope, is used. It is a thin, telescopic tube, with a light and a small camera on the end of it. It is passed through your mouth, through your stomach, and into the first part of your small intestine. During the procedure, a small tube, like a straw (called a stent), is placed into the blocked bile duct to make a passage-way. The stent allows the bile from your liver to flow freely into your small intestine again, and so relieve the jaundice. About 2 percent of breastfed babies develop jaundice after the first week. Some develop breast milk jaundice in the first week due to low calorie intake or dehydration. Pathologic jaundice is the term used jaundice presents a health risk.
