Officers in the U.S. military are making education a top priority for deployed soldiers. “Knowledge is power. If Marines make the most of educational opportunities while in the military, it will give them a competitive edge not only in the military, but as civilians returning to the workforce,” Gunnery Sgt. Anthony Forbes, says. The military grants help to soldiers enrolling in courses. Forbes completed 71 credits while enlisted and is pursuing a degree in human resources. “Given the situation in Iraq, there is no reason why every Marine can’t take at least one subject while here,” details Master Sgt. James Emch. “Marines might as well jump at the opportunity to improve themselves and start a successful future.” Deployed soldiers can get up to 100 percent of their educational expenses paid for by the government through offerings like Tuition Assistance, the Montgomery GI Bill, and the Marine Corpse College Fund. “There is no better time to begin an education than while these Marines are in the Corps. There is no reason to wait until the tour of duty is completed,” comments an education technician at Camp Courtney in Japan. A friend recommended he visit ClassesandCareers.com , a free online education database. It does not take more than a few brief minutes to submit their data and be transferred live to an education advisor. "I looked up the website and answered questions about my plans," Sergeant John Noble says. "Not long after, an advisor called me and helped me find a nice, flexible online program. I can complete lectures and homework during my time off." Noble is now more than halfway through his bachelors in accounting. "It has been quite handy for me to keep up with my education while I’m here,” Noble stated. “I should be done just before I am released and will be able to go directly into a Master's Program.”
