The Definition of beauty

The debate between beauty and brains has long been resolved. We know now that a good combination of both will give way for a woman to realize her potential. This world has found a deeper appreciation of beauty. That beauty is not only skin deep is no longer just an adage but a philosophy.

Several contests have been launched for the campaign of real beauty, and several studies have been conducted to define the word “beautiful”. In a study entitled “The Real Truth about Beauty: A Global Report”, the researchers found out that of the 3,200 women interviewed, only 2% describe themselves as beautiful. The study was originally intended to uncover women’s idea and perception of beauty. Instead, they found that the word “beauty” is so narrowly defined that it is close to impossible to achieve.

The researcher further delved into the subject and asked “so what is beautiful?” Two-thirds of the women interviewed said that physical attractiveness and beauty are two different concepts wherein the former talks about how a person looks whereas the latter is about whom a person is. Happiness, confidence, dignity and humor are the powerful components of beauty whereas body weight, shape and sense of style compose physical attractiveness. Some of the women said that being happy has a large part in making them feel beautiful in the same way that being loved makes them feel like a beauty queen. To further highlight the distinction of beauty from physical attractiveness some women say: “If I had a daughter, I would want her to feel beautiful, even if she is not physically attractive."

With that being said, let us look at beauty treatments such as botox and wrinkle treatments.

Our world today is obsessed by beauty, with well-being and happiness incorporated. People want to feel good and the only way for some to achieve that is to look good. When we say “look good” we do not mean “sexy body, Caucasian”. We mean that we are satisfied with what we see in the mirror. People nowadays know that there are some “looks” that they will not achieve and the best way that they feel good is to look the best that they can. This is why cosmetic surgery has its ethical principles. Not all cosmetic doctors operate on just anyone.

Have you tried watching Nip Tuck? It’s a TV series wherein the protagonists are cosmetic surgeons. Before any treatment, they interview all potential clients and ask them “how can we help you?” There were many times they had to decline a patient’s request if they do not feel that it is for the client’s wellbeing. They even had to employ a psychologist who gave a psychological analysis of a patient’s situation and recommends operation if it will help the patient feel good about themselves. Beauty treatments are no longer categorized as “for the vain” but it is already considered as something that people need in our quest for stability and happiness. Everyone has the right to feel beautiful, in the same way that they can pursue steps to make this a reality.
