The Usage of Pendant Lights

By: Jhoana Cooper

Widely used, pendant lights are perhaps among the most used light fixtures. Pendant lights are suspended from the ceiling by a metal rod, a cord, or a chain. A lone light fixture, it is similar to a chandelier since both are suspended light fixtures. However, a chandelier uses several light bulbs, illuminated by its clear glass or crystals. On the other hand, pendant light is often enclosed by glass or metal casings, which is part of the design in itself, like a pendant hanging from a person’s neck. Since they are often used homes, they are widely available in stores such as Fine Art Lighting, among others. However, since they are so common, many people tend to forget that pendant lights should be used properly in order to achieve its maximum potential. Pendant lights are not just artificial sources of light; in itself, they can also be considered as works of art.

Pendant lights are among the favorite choice of homeowners because of its aesthetic value. It can be considered as a decorative light, since its structure gives it so much room to have several designs. They can be availed in styles such as renaissance, rustic, European, Tuscan, and traditional. For more orthodox individuals, they are also available in more functional styles. All of these are available in reputable stores such as Fine Art Lighting. Fine Art Lighting offers a number of pendant lights as well as other light fixtures.

Pendant lights can be used for a number of purposes: as a main source of light or as a means to accentuate certain areas. Pendant lights use only one light bulb, unlike chandeliers which need several. Hence, pendant lights, especially when one uses power efficient light bulbs, can be used as a means to cut the cost of electricity (Fine Art Lighting has options for this). In any case, in order to light up a wide area, pendant lights should be lined up together. A singular pendant light at the center of an area can give a more romantic feel, due to the dim light which requires people to focus on a definite center, where the light is most evident.

The pendant light should be hanged at least 28 inches above the dining table if it is placed in the dining room. This length is similar when one hangs a chandelier. Since pendant lights are much smaller than chandeliers, the since of the pendant light is not that much of a factor even if the table is huge, as long as it is enough to illuminate the entire area. However, if the dining table is large, then the pendant light could be hanged higher than the usual 28 to 34 inches. This is so the pendant light and the dining table won’t clash. If one wants to create a more intimate setting, it is best to hang the pendant light low. However, the homeowner should use a smaller table. This is, again, to emphasize the table. This technique gives off the illusion and feel of warmth and comfort, a combination of function and comfort.
