Tips For Self Defense

By: davids

Self defense is not just about learning a few self defense techniques, it's about all the things we do on a daily basis to make our lives safer. This is a list of simple guidelines that may just help you realize some potentially dangerous situations. They may just trigger a sense of awareness in you.

There are two broad categories of self-defense information. Whether they spell it out or not, all self-defense books, articles, classes and seminars are based on one or both of two "themes"... a MENTAL APPROACH or a PHYSICAL APPROACH.

The "Physical Approach" is based on "EFFICIENCY." It pursues physical skill development as a self-defense solution. It involves learning punches, kicks, grappling and defensive techniques. Although avoiding a physical altercation is given "passing attention," EXACTLY how to do that is often glazed over or not addressed at all.

The problem with a lot of karate is the way in which it is trained. If you want to be able to get through a live situation in one piece you have to train for it. Marching about doing your kata and inventing clever bunkai, for instance, simply won't work.

Staying safe outside of your home doesn't mean you need to dedicate years to Kung fu training. It means you need to acquire some basic knowledge, a few highly effective techniques and learning to trust your intuition. If you take some time to learn this basic information then you can keep yourself safe by avoiding potentially dangerous situations.

You could also call this step "Controlling Your Fear." If you notice someone or something that could be a threat - perhaps someone who looks angry or suspicious, keep your eye on them. You don't have to stare-and-glare, but you should be aware of them and what they're doing. I talk about this concept quite a bit in the video, "Danger Prevention Tactics: Protecting Yourself Like a Pro." And finally...
