Biting your tongue can be good advice at times, like when your mother-in-law asks you what you think of her new hairdo. But when you take this advice too literally, your attempt at tact may well rewarded with unspeakable agony. You probably do not think about your tongue a whole lot until you clamp down on it with your bicuspids. Then you are quickly reminded of what a tender and sensitive organ it is. While bites and other minor injuries are probably the most common cause of tongue pain, they are by no means the only cause. Your tongue can hurt in the absence of injury. Tongue pain can also be a symptom of allergies or iron deficiency or a side effect of certain medications. Here are some tips that you can consider to adopt for fast relief. 1. Look For Suspicious Spots Inspect your tongue in a mirror for any lesion or ulceration. It is recommended that you do this every month or if your tongue is painful. And don’t just look at the surface. Check the sides and underneath, too. If you notice something, observe for a week to 10 days. If it does not go away, have it checked by your dentist, especially if it has no apparent cause. 2. Apply An Anesthetic Look for an over-the-counter medication called Orajel. Orajel is a topical anesthetic, so it will reduce the pain. And it sticks to wet tissue, so it serves as a protective coating for any lesions in the mouth. 3. Bide Your Time Your mouth can heal quite quickly on its own because it has such a quick turnover of cells. For this reason, doing nothing will usually work just fine. Hang in there for a few days. You should notice improvement in 7 to 10 days. If you don’t, see your dentist. 4. Rinse And Spit Gargling with warm salt water each time you brush your teeth can provide temporary relief. If you high blood pressure or heart disease, be aware that many commercial mouth rinses contain a lot of sodium. To limit the amount you absorb, don’t swallow the rinse, just swish it around in your mouth, then spit it out. 5. Choose Your Foods Wisely You can easily aggravate a mouth sore by eating the wrong foods. Most experts recommend avoiding anything by eating wrong foods. It is recommended avoiding anything salty, spicy, or acidic and that includes orange juice and tomato juice. You can reduce the acidity of these beverages by diluting them with water. That way, they won’t burn when you swallow them. 6. Maintain Your Routine While the thought of wielding a toothbrush near your throbbing tongue may make you bristle, it is more important now than ever. It is recommended to brush regularly three to five times a day, will keep your mouth free of food debris. 7. Bag The Butts Cigarette smoke is an irritant that can make your tongue pain even worse. You would be much better off if you quite huffing and puffing.
