Top Tips To Treat And Prevent Childbirth Pain

By: Raymond Lee

Giving birth to a child can be one of the most joyful experiences of a woman’s life, but it is undeniably one of the most painful. And the lingering controversy surrounding the role of pain medication during the childbirth does not help matters. Should you opt for pain medication, or shouldn’t you? Answers vary, depending on whom you ask. It is believed that pain medication prevents a woman from fully participating in the birth of her child and may also harm the baby. Others believe that medication helps kill the pain while it keeps a woman alert and lowers the risk of fetal injury. Whether you opt for pain medication is a personal decision that you need to discuss with your doctor early in your pregnancy. But whatever you decide, you owe it to yourself to know all of your options.

Being physically and emotionally ready for childbirth can significantly reduce a woman’s perception of pain. That is why many doctors recommend that mothers-to-be and their partners take a course in prepared childbirth. The goal of this approach to labor and delivery is to educate both parents-to-be for the upcoming birth. The benefits of taking such a class can be considerable. A shorter labor and less trauma during labor and delivery. These classes can help educate you about what to expect, so it is not all new and frightening. There is a correlation between prenatal anxiety and the amount of pain during labor. The more anxious a woman is, the more pain she tends to experience.

Learning relaxation techniques such as deep breathing also seems to help lessen childbirth pain. Pregnant women who practise these techniques for 30 minutes during the day have quicker, easier labors. Some women practice self-hypnosis as they are giving birth and it can provide some if not complete pain relief.

Women who opt for natural childbirth often choose to deliver with the help of a certified nurse-midwife. Certified nurse-midwives use a variety of natural methods to help a woman manage childbirth pain, such as visualization, self-hypnosis, massage, and soothing lighting and music. If a birth proceeds normally, most women do not need pain medication. But if they do, there is always the option of going to the hospital. If you opt for natural childbirth, however, you should know that anesthesia may be required if you need a cesarean section.

The most common medical option for pain relief during childbirth is the epidural. In an epidural, doctors inject a small amount of a numbing drug near the spine. Epidurals can provide virtually complete relief from labor pain. Serious side effects are rare. Moreover, the pain medications used today allow a woman to avoid the pain while still being alert and present during the delivery.

You should know, however, that some epidurals slow labor and increase the risk of cesarean delivery. Anesthesia used during delivery remains controversial. Your best bet is to discuss your options with your obstetrician and anesthesiologist well before you go into labor.
