Using Web Directories to Generate One Way Links

The use of website directories is a really good way to help generate good one way inbound links to your target page. There are thousands, if not millions, of website directories available that are often on the look out for good websites to list in their directories.

Website directories vary in what is available. You need to accept that many directories are a business and therefore many will list your site permanently for a small fee. However, if you don't want to spend any money listing and promoting your site, you can still make good use of free website directories.

Typing in the search words "free directories" into Google results in thousands of free website directories that you can submit your website to. Please note, many website directories will only accept submissions for your home page and not pages within your site. However, it is often good practice to consider trying to list your pages within your site as well rather than just concentrating on your home page. Again, in Google, you can type in the search "deep link directories", to list the directories that allow you to submit your pages within your site.

Many directories will give preference to website owners who pay to have their site listed in the directories. Often, the payment will result in your site being listed in a couple of days rather than several months, and therefore, if you want to generate one way inbound links faster this is going to be your better bet. Personally, I have paid many directories to list my sites to help generate the inbound links rather than paying for PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising. The fee is often only a couple of dollars and the link is permanent, therefore I get some return.

Alternatively, if you don't wish to pay to be listed and don't want to wait months before being listed, another alternative is to provide a reciprocal link with the directory. Many directories will offer this as an alternative to a fee and will help get your website listed quickly, but won't have the same effect as a one way inbound link.

Finally, you can arrange to have all the submissions done for you. There are many directory submission companies on the web that will submit your site to free directories. Please note, although this does save time, some directories consider it as spamming and again your site might be take months before being listed. If you choose this option, you should expect to pat approximately $50 for about 1000 submissions and I would try and use a submission service that allows you to have a variety of titles and anchor text so you can use your target keywords.

Using directories is a really good way of generating one way inbound links to your site, however, before you start submitting to any directory, it is best to try and target directories that are PR4 or above, although these directories often take longer to list your site.
