Versatile Stock Pots Expand You Cooking Ability

By: Peter Gitundu

Stock pots are one of the most versatile pieces of cooking equipment that can be added to your home. They can be used to make stocks and to reduce stocks but also work well to cook pasta, soups, in canning and in steaming foods. If you buy a quality pot, it should last many years and work well in many types of cooking.

Pots are available in several sizes. Pots may be as small as six quarts but can be as large as twenty quarts. For an even larger stock pot you can move to the commercial pots. The stock pot needs to be larger than your soup pot. You will normally make more stock than soup and need to reduce the stock before making soup. However, there is no reason not to use the stock pot to make the soup.

The six to twelve pot is adequate for most homes. Those pots can be used in cooking many other foods. Many pots are made using a round base along with tall straight sides.

It is important that your stock pot has a heavy thick bottom that will prevent burning. If you plan to use the pot for sups, this is especially important. Otherwise the starches from the soup may begin to sick as the soup simmers. A thin bottomed pot can cause these starches to begin to scorch and ruin the entire pot of soup.

Stock pots can be made of many kinds of materials. Some of those include copper, aluminum, stainless steel or cast iron. Additionally, you may find some that are coated using nonstick materials. These choices may have different benefits and will affect the cost of the pot.

One important consideration is the ability of the pot to transmit heat from the heating element to the food. A pot that is effective at transmitting the heat up its sides helps to keep the liquid at the same temperature at both top and bottom of the pot.

Be sure that the pot is attached firmly. You do not want to have to worry about a handle breaking off a pot of steaming hot water while transporting from the stove to the sink or counter. Look for handles that have been attached firmly using heavy rivets of screws.

It may be difficult to choose the stock pot that you want to buy, but if you choose wisely, the pot can last for many years and serve your family well.
