Students from Asia, Africa, Latin America and other European nations are better in grammar and usage than most British students, according to findings of a 2007 research program. The study concluded that British students are more prone to committing usual English errors like using 'advise' instead of 'advice'; 'been' instead of 'bean' and 'their' instead of 'there', and vice versa. Many British students also appear to be less comfortable in Basic English grammar than their foreign student counterparts. This finding is interesting because many would readily think British students are good in technically using the language as it is native to them. The fact also lends credence to early assumptions that even students from the United States are finding it harder to use the language more correctly, because of the proliferation of slang language. Experts say UK students often neglect paying proper attention to grammar and usage because they feel they do not need to pay attention to the language, since they are native speakers. Apparently, such British students are wrong, as there is a significant distinction between speaking English comfortably and speaking the language correctly. What do the authorities say about this finding? The United Kingdom education department said it would make its own assessment of the situation and abruptly initiate moves to address the problem of poor English proficiency. British people are expected to be better at speaking the universal language, so the government is expected to mark its action to combat or apply a solution to the problem. Foreign students should be congratulated for successfully striving to acquire a better grasp of the English language. It is nice that more people from all over the world are now very knowledgeable in speaking the language.
