What Does a Wet Kit Do?

By: James Handrousen

A wet kit is a kit that is installed on trucks or semi-trucks that have a Power Take Off, commonly known as a PTO. The PTO routinely activates the hydraulic pump, which is installed on the truck along with other accessories such as the boom or crane. The accessories connected to the hydraulic pump become operational when the pump is activated.

Each wet kit has many components. Some of the components can include PTO’s, hoses, tanks, and fittings, just to name a few. When the PTO activates the hydraulic pump, it begins to push the hydraulic fluid through the hoses and into the cylinders.

When this happens, it is possible to lift heavy loads or do other heavy tasks. The discharged fluid is returned to the reservoir after lifting the loads. Then the hydraulic pump, continuing the closed cycle indefinitely, sucks it up again.

There are various manufacturers that offer the complete wet kit machine. Parts are available separately. Other types of wet kits (often called wetline kits) that are available are:

1. Wetline kits for dumper trailers - These wetline kits for dumpers can produce up to 3000psi of pressure. Wetline kits have even more possible arrangements. Also available are tailor made kits that suit your needs.

2. Wetline kits for Utility Trailers - This type of kit has the capacity to produce high pressures for low flow of fluids.

There are wetline kits of various other capacities for different applications are available on the market apart from these. The pressure created by the hydraulic pump and the flow of fluid determine the capacities of these systems. The size of the reservoir increases according to the flow that the hydraulic fluid increases.

Wetline kits do not come in standard sizes. The kit is custom made to the needs of the customer. It is advised that when you purchase your wetline kit, you consult the manufacturer directly and explain your detailed requirements. The manufacturer will suggest a specific wetline kit of the correct type and suitable capacity for all of your various uses.

The valve system that controls the flow of the fluid and the hydraulic pump (dump pump) can be setup using various possible arrangements. Those possible arrangements are:

1. A two line dump pump system - The dump pump and the control valve go together in this system. This is very practical for the dump trailer that uses it intermittently.

2. Three line dump system - Just like that last system, the hydraulic pump and the control valve are integrated. This system can be used for the dump trailers that run continuously.

3. The separate the pump and the control valve system - The hydraulic pump and the control valve are apart from one another.

Wetline kits operate on several arrangements. You should consult the manufacturer to find out the exact requirements you need and see if your system will work for your intended application.
