Technology has advanced dramatically over years. What it took hours to days to finish on the printing press now takes matter of minutes to do with a computer and a printer. Carts and wagons on stone and wood wheels running with manual force are now cars running on rubber wheels running on engines. Swords and daggers are now guns and missiles, and what it was thought to be magic is now proven scientifically. With the advancement in technology, human life expectancy has increased with the medical improvements. What was thought to be a curse is now proven to be caused by bacteria or a defect in a DNA. With improvements in medical field every day, our life expectancy is increasing every day. Restoring the eye sight was thought to be impossible and many people with bad eye sights were stuck with glasses and contact lens at best, but now, with a Lasik surgery, more and more people are seeing clearly with their own eyes. Though many people have knowledge that such operation exist, not a lot of people know what the patients go through. There are several necessary steps of preparations in the pre-operative period, and post-operative period. During the preoperative period, patients are advised to stop wearing their contact lenses if they are wearing them for a certain amount of time. Usually 5-7 days for soft contact lenses and up to 6 months for hard lenses. Afterwards, the patient's corneas are examined to determine the location and how much of the corneal tissues are to be removed during the operation. The operation itself is done with the patient awake, but they are given mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops. The LASIK or Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is performed by creating a flap of corneal tissue, then remodeling of the cornea underneath the flap with the laser, and then the flap is repositioned to fit the patient's eyes. No burning is actually done but it is done by vaporization. After repositioning the flap, the surgeon checks for air bubbles, debris and proper fit on the eye. The flap is held in place by natural adhesion until it is completed. After the operation, the patients are to keep their eyes moisturized and not look at bright light. Though the practice is done many times at many places, it is important to find a good and trust worthy surgeon since it is your eyes that they are dealing with. Though our medical technology has improved there are limits, so you should look for a well marketed clinics and surgeons because most likely, the successful places would have more finances to advertise more. Today, we not only use our medical knowledge for health purposes but as a luxury. The demand for plastic, cosmetic and lasik surgery is increasing; since people are getting healthier they are demanding more out of the medical field to satisfy them. What was originally developed as a cure for mental disease is now starting to be thought as a makeover. So think again before going to a surgeon if you really need it.
