Whitewater Rafting - The Affordable Excursion

By: Jarrard Keenson

No matter how large or small your group might be, it can be hard to find an excursion that is both fun and affordable. If you want to plan a vacation, you may be faced with challenges, especially since gas prices have skyrocketed, airlines have gone bankrupt and cut back on their offered services, and your daily cost of living has increased as well. If you live in California, there are more opportunities available for fun and affordable activities than anywhere else. After all, there are thirty-six and a half million people in California who can take advantage of the American River.

The South Fork of the American River, a beautiful 21-mile stretch of class III whitewater, lies within a day's drive from any of the borders of California. Gold was discovered here, and this is where the great American migration west found its home. Adventures for groups from 1 to 200 can be arranged that will include gourmet dining and a relaxing evening around a campfire.

Trips range from the shortest one-day trips, where rafters travel down the river for only a few hours, to 3-day/2-night sleepovers down two different rivers with all meals and bus travel from Southern California included.

Included in most of the trips are deli-style gourmet lunches, necessary river safety equipment (including personal flotation devices [PFDs], helmets, paddles, rafts, guides), and a shuttle between base camp and both put-in and take-out points. If your trip includes an overnight stay, your guide will fix you a wonderful dinner. Each evening, relax under clear skies as you enjoy fireside chats and sleep nestled near the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Staff will greet you every morning with an impressive breakfast buffet, including delicious choices that will appeal to vegetarians and meat-lovers alike.

Each morning, after your morning buffet breakfast, your trip leader will prepare you for another exciting day of whitewater rafting. Along the way, rafters will float by exciting sights such as historical landmarks, local vegetation, and wildlife such as the rarely seen river otter. In most cases, rafters will be required to participate in the actual paddling, but a high level of athletic ability isn't necessary; guides use their expertise to teach each crew to paddle in unison and generate the necessary power for navigating the river.

The Meat Grinder, Trouble Maker, and Satan's Cesspool & Hospital Bar are found on the South Fork of the American River. These rapids have international notoriety. Though these "big" rapids are powerful, they also require no maneuvering, meaning that rafters can hang on and enjoy themselves while passing through them. On the three-day adventure, the third day is spent visiting the Middle Fork of the American, where class IV rapids may require rafters to do some paddling.

When the trip is through, shuttles will take participants back to base camp where photo shops will have pictures of each rafter’s great moments conquering the river's rapids. Here at the end, rafters exchange email addresses, hugs, and promises to return for a chance to revisit this inexpensive and amazing getaway.
