Your Organic T-shirts Help Save the World

By: Allan Chua

"Organic T-shirts are becoming popular these days now that more and more people are starting to educate themselves about the risks of using nonbiodegradable materials for the production of most commodities. They are primarily concerned about the environmental footprint they leave during and after the manufacturing processes that they have inspired themselves to develop a more eco-friendly means of engaging in business without having to harm our planet. Thus, in the production of organic T-shirts they have considered using organic materials made from organic cotton, hemp, and bamboo. They also use organic screen printing to ensure that they leave very little or non-existent pollution for the environment and human safety. Most organic T-shirts are attractively and colorfully manufactured and designed with the use of water-based inks for eco-friendly screen printing. Although some merchandise must be produced through the discharge printing method, better or minimal risk options are weighed between water-based screen printing and phthalate-free plastisols/polyvinyl chloride resin chemicals and its use.

The sustainability of a product requires that the raw materials are grown with very little or else no pesticides used at all. Therefore, companies such as organic T-shirts merchandisers that support pro-environment campaigns have developed and created programs for growers to produce harvests that comply with the company’s need of having 100 percent organic materials for its production. An example would be methods such as companion planting and intercropping where crops such as organic cotton and another variety are grown together in one area as these plants serve as a benefit to each other. One plant provides nutrients to the other while the other deters harmful insects from infesting the area. Another method would be growing cover crops where these plants build healthy topsoil thus replenishing the nutrients of the soil. Organic farming greatly improves the overall quality of the land and this is just one positive step in saving our environment from pollution. Pro-environment companies have also discovered that the exclusively imported hemp and bamboo are very excellent materials to use as fibers for the production of organic T-shirts since they are grown pesticide-free. They are noted to be as strong and as durable as the conventional cotton. Conventional cottons are lately being viewed negatively by global warming campaigners as an environmental risk because of the hazardous chemicals used for its pesticides and the vast amounts of water needed in order for these plants to thrive.

Another requirement implemented for the manufacturing of organic T-shirts is through the use of sustainable screen printing where all chemicals and materials give out the least or zero footprint after its production. Although water-based inks are a more sustainable material as compared to plastisol inks when printed in light-colored garments, companies producing environmental T-shirts are using these phthalate-free plastisol inks for dark-colored clothing since the manufacturing of these types of apparels use the discharge printing method where its curing releases harmful chemicals into the air. Studies show that water-based screen printing is highly more hazardous to the environment and for humans as compared to phthalate-free plastisol when used for dark-colored garments.

Pro-environment business companies such as those producing organic T-shirts are highly regarded and very much admired by millions of people worldwide who are doing everything to help save our planet. Be a part of this movement and start a business in organic T-shirts or simply wear them to show the world that you care."
